Film Presentation - The Future
In the very near future, as near as this year, more new movies will begin to flow into homes and portable devices through the Internet. In last September, Apple began offering previously released Disney movies through its iTunes Store.
DAVID DENBY mentioned in his blog http://www.jeffpidgeon.com/2007/01/film-presentation-past-present-and.html he downloaded the first “Pirates of the Caribbean” onto his hard drive, then put it onto a video iPod.
I certainly share the similar sentiment with David “The movies currently offered by Apple and other downloading services are the first trickles of a flood. Soon, new movies will come pouring through the Internet and perhaps through cable franchises as well, and people will look at them on screens of all sizes. For those of us who are not agnostics but fervent believers in the theatrical experience, this latest development in movie distribution is of more than casual interest.”
Definitely, Internet will be a very cost effective and popular movie distribution channel, but watching movie on iPod or any 2-inch portable device does not excite me.
I still enjoy watching movies at the theatre or at the comfort of my home equipped with home theatre system, and share the joy with friends or the right audience.
Definitely the feeling or experience of watching classic like “Gone With The Wind”, The Ten Commands” at the theatre is miles different from watching it at the tiny iPod.
Well, the Gen Y watches video anywhere, anytime and anyhow. Watching movies at the iPod could be appealing to them.
My conclusion: Internet is a good distribution channel for movies, but not every type of movie is suitable to be watched with a handheld. “Spiderman III” will be great but not Lawrence of Arabia.
